what i absorb in Caribbean history

In the 3weeks of being back to school what I learnt in Caribbean history is that there were 4 arguments presented against👍 and for 👎 slavery and the amelioration act.

the 4 arguments for slavery are based on the morals and principles and treating the slaves as people.

the anti slavey arguments

Humanitarian argument-it showed the inhumane side of slavery and how the slaves are being treated highlighting the brutality of their lives. They endured not only physical but also psychological trauma, witnessing other slaves being whipped, hanged, and mutilated as a means of instilling fear and control.

Religious argument-the belief that all is equal in the eyes of God clashed with the reality of slavery. The enslaved people were regarded as property like an animal 🦮who depends on their owners for sustenance and care, which is opposite to what the lord says in the bible, that no one's master.

Social arguments- some of the whites on plantations felt uncomfortable and guilty. They didn't like living in amongst so much fear and cruelty.

Economic argument - the investment in slaves was being wasted as they died from diseases like measles, fevers and ulcers😷😷😷😷.

The pro slavery arguments

Humanitarian reasoning, that slavery in the Caribbean was seen as an improvement over slavery in Africa However, this was not true because in Africa, people typically became slaves either through capture by rival tribes or as punishment for crimes and they claimed it to be of better treatment, Caribbean slaves often endured harsh conditions, suffering from diseases, being overwork, and physical abuse.

Economic that slaves were suited for labor in the Caribbean due to the similarity in climate compared to Africa.

Religious argument is that slavery was supported by the bible referencing the story of Ham to support their stance.

Socially, planters who owned large numbers of slaves could aspire to successful careers in politics and accumulate significant wealth.

The amelioration is the system of making slavery comfortable .  It was introduced by the British government in 1823-1833

Some of the laws passed were:

Slaves could now be a part of church on Saturdays, provide a last name and work in the market and other amenities the whites have.

Female slaves were not to be flogged if they committed a punishment.

Slaves were not to be separated from their families or used as payment for debt.

Children born after 1823 was to be emancipated.

Slaves can now pass on property to their children.

These laws did not last long.

The planters hated the fact the British government was meddling in their business, they were angry that now slaves could go to church, have a legal name and surname, being buried. they didn't like the thought that slaves are being treated as one of them all their efforts to bring slaves down was being ruined. They sensed that their control over  slaves were coming to an end, it was true. soon after came emancipation👏👐.  The irony of it all was that most of parliament were planters 👀😱. The main goal of amelioration was not to make the slaves feel comfortable but to make anti-slavery movement silent who at the time saw the cruel punishments as going too far and that planters were going against God with their punishments and all the things said in the bible about love and equality. At the end of the day amelioration was to show that the planters could be humane, and slavery wasn't that bad. 💀
